Dr. Susan Powell, although wanting to become a veterinarian since she was in the 6th grade, started out working in human medicine. First as an EMT, then paramedic, 911 dispatcher, deputy coroner, and a Clinical Research Coordinator. Having always enjoyed challenges and solving puzzles she began her journey in veterinary medicine by completing her undergraduate degree in Biology at San Jose State in San Jose, California. She then completed her PhD in Reproductive Physiology at Oregon State, where she worked with llamas studying their maternal recognition of pregnancy signal and embryo migration. Dr. Powell then obtained her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree at The Ohio State University in 2003. After moving back to the west coast in 2003, she completed a year-long rotating medical/surgical internship in Ventura, California. She then moved to the Palm Springs area where she worked at 2 different private practices and then at the county animal shelter in Thousand Palms, California. In 2012, she moved to San Luis Obispo, California where she was the Director of Shelter Medicine at a private animal shelter for 5 years. In 2017, she moved to Washington and finally found her way to beautiful Kingston and Apple Tree Cove Animal Hospital in August 2019. In addition to her expert spaying and neutering skills, she loves helping her patients and their owners enhance their human-animal bond by promoting great care, keeping pets healthy and happy.
